and Background
West
Visayas State University (informally referred to
as West or WVSU) is a public normal research university (a university system) located in Western Visayas region of the Philippines with its main campus in La
Paz, Iloilo City. It was established
formally in 1924 as Iloilo Normal School under the Philippine normal school
system during the American colonial period in the Philippines under the tutelage of the Thomasites, but it dates back its founding 22 years later when
the university's College of Education was founded in 1902. It later became West
Visayas State College in 1965 and became a university and changed its name to
West Visayas State University in 1986.

1.3 Teaching system
The ILS is under the
CHED and also the college, but it also uses the DepEd policy because WVSU is a
public school.
1.4 Materials and other
learning sources
Books, journals,
internet, laptop, LCD projector, chalk, and board.
1.5 Measurement and
evaluation system
The ILS uses DepEd’s
grading system. There are 4 grading periods. Every grading period has long test
or periodical test. Teachers also give formative and summative test and measure
through students' recitation.
1.6 Curriculum
ILS WVSU uses K12. The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years
of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High
School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time
for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare
graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and
entrepreneurship.

contents
2.1 Teaching methods
Teachers used
communicative language teaching. They engaged students in work in pairs and
also maximized language use in communication.
2.2 Learning materials and innovation
I did not know for
overall because all teacher I observed taught in the beginning of meeting or
initial task.
2.3 Sources of learning and technology
They used LCD projector,
chalk, powerpoint persentation, photocopy of the text, and youtube.
2.4 Authentic assessment
Because the day I
observed were initial tasks, I did not find the authentic assessment during my
observation.

3.2 Teaching plan related to your major
Lesson plan in Philppines is detail. It must involve conversation between teacher and students.

4 Observation on Teacher(s)
4.1 Planning for teaching
Lesson plan here is
different from my lesson plan in Indonesia. Here, the lesson plan has to be
detailed. It has to include not only the conversation between the teacher and
the students but also the expected answer for every question the teacher asks.
The format of the lesson plan is actually similar to my lesson plan in
Indonesia but the name is different. In Indonesia, I usually use indicator or
learning objective, but here it is called learning outcomes. It is also divided
into part of meetings like initial task for the first meeting. In Indonesia, it
is just divided into three parts: preactivity, whilst-activity, and
post-activity. However, in Indonesia for a meeting is usually 90 minutes. It is
totally different because here it is just 45 minutes. The maximum amount for a
class in Indonesia is 30 students, but here for a class is more than 50
students. This makes the lesson plan also different. I found that the lesson
plan here is able to engaged the students for every activity in the class, even
it is a big class. The activities are also suitable with the condition of the
class both the environment and the students. The other difference is that the
classroom does not have white board. The teachers need chalk to use the board.
4.2 Preparing lessons and materials
The preparation of
lessons and materials during the class is similar like using LCD projector. The
teachers used video to make the lesson more interesting. They also involved
technology and social media while delivering the lessons.
4.3 Teaching in class
Teachers as facilitators
led the students to understand the lesson by guiding questions. Because of
student-centered, the teachers involved the students in every activity. They
also used different techniques depend on the situation in the class. They
related the lesson to the reality in order to persuade students to get interest
with the topic. They also told true story related to the lesson, so the lesson
became more interesting. They still needed chalk even they used LCD projector.
4.4 Measurement and evaluation
I did not find the way
the teachers evaluated the students during my observation because all of the
were on the first meeting or initial task.
4.5 Others
The time is one of the
problems here. English sections I observed, all started in the afternoon. It
made the situation was not effective. I saw students slept in the class and did
not listen to the teachers, but the classroom management is still good. They
could handle the class even they had to admonish the students.
5 Teaching Practice
5.1 Procedures of teaching
Actually, my mentor changed the topic. It supposed to be The Little Prince.

5.2 Time management and organizing activities
For my preparation before
teaching, I divided my meeting into sessions. Then, I made time arrangement for
every meeting including the sessions of the meeting. For my prevention of much
time consuming, I asked my buddies to remind me about the time. I engaged
students in the activity both individually and in grouping. I made the
activities for every meeting in grouping and individual. I involved both
cooperative and competitive learning in a meeting.
5.3 Problem-solving
1. Time consuming
In some activities, they
need to consume much time because of games. The purpose of the game is actually
to make students learn without feeling opressed. The best way to manage the
time is making time arrangement before practicing. I found that time
arrangement is useful. It is because it can be a reminder, so I just have to
see the clock on my phone at glance to fit it to the time arrangement. My
buddies also helped in reminding the time.
2. Condition of the class
The class just has some
fans. The weather during my practicum was so hot. The class was not condusive
before my class, but the games and other activities were useful to make it live
during my class. The students were enthusiastic to learn the lesson through the
game.
5.4 Classroom management
Some of the students are
noisy. Handling a big class is not easy, but I just called them “class” with
big smile and shining eyes made them silent immediately and listened to me
again.

6 Summary and Suggestions
6.1 Purposes of practicum
The purposes are
exchanging culture, comparing education system, and knowing how to delivering
material well. First, this project gives opportunity to student teachers to
learn others’ culture in the neighboring country. They will exchange the
culture to get know each other. This will make those countries closer. Next,
This project offers the student teachers to learn and teach with different
system from their own country. Even Philippines and Indonesia are neighbor, it
does not make the education system between those the same. This is an opportunity
and also a challenge to develop the material better by comparing and using the
good side of each of them. Last, this helps the student teachers to know how to
deliver and develop material well by answering this challenge. Each country has
different education systems, different characters of the students, and also
different condition of the class. This situation force the student teachers to
be creative and innovative as well, so they can survive and give the best to
the receiving university. Those are the advantages of this project offered.
6.2 Procedures of practicum
This project is held for
four weeks and divided into four parts: 1. orientation and observation, 2.
teaching assistant, 3. practicum period, 4. evaluation and reflection. First
part is for the first week, the second part is for the second week, the third
part is for the third week, and the fourth part is for the last week. The
procedure of practicum here is making lesson plan first. In this part, student
teachers have to discuss with their mentors about their topics. Then, it must
be passed to the cooperative teacher to check it. After that, if there’s no
problem with our lesson plan, we can use it as your guide during the class; or
we have to pass the revision of our lesson plan if there’s a problem with it.
6.3 Outcomes of practicum
Student teachers know
the differences between theirs and the receiving country. They can compare the
differences of their education system to take the good side of them. This
project helps student teachers to develop education. Collaboration of the good
side of their education system between those countries will lead them to make
better future of education.
6.4 The challenges of practicum
The challenges are
culture, environment, and the education system. First, culture is very
sensitive because attitude include polite and impolite is included in culture.
Here, students used to do what they want as well as they think it does not hurt
anyone like they drink in front of the class without permission, listen to music
while the teacher delivers the lesson, and sleep in the class during the class.
The environment is another thing that challenge student teachers her. The class
amounts more than 50 students without air conditioning. In Lampung the
maximum amount is 30 students and some of schools in the city have air
conditioning for each class. The building is also uncomfortable. The noise of
other class can be heard in another class. It makes the student teachers take
much effort to handle the class and also to speak loudly in front of the class.
Voice modulation is needed to practice, so all the students can hear the voice.
The last is the education system. Here, for one meeting, student teachers are
given only 45 minutes to deliver material, but in Indonesia student teachers
get 90 minutes. Student teachers need much time to adapt. Lesson plan in
Philppines is also different from lesson plan in Indonesia because it must be
detailed.
6.5 Overall impression
I really like Iloilo.
Ilonggos are warm and humble. They are very friendly and kind. They always
greet everyone and it makes me feel amazed. I make a lot friends. I’ll miss
them so much. I hope I can go back soon.

6.6 Suggestions for future improvement
For SEAMEO, I hope this
project will be better. It would better fund fully all of the SEA teachers, so
there will be equalization among the countries. I also expect other ASEAN
countries join this project.
For WVSU, I hope the CR
(comfort room) for students cleaner. The smell will disturb student’s focus and
concentration. I expect the students to respect teacher even they are student teachers. I also hope them to be discipline.
